Palm Beach International Airport Faces Major Delays After System Outage...

Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) experienced widespread disruptions Tuesday morning after a critical computer system failure grounded flights and stranded passengers. The outage, which began around 6:30 AM ET, affected check-in, baggage handling, and security screening operations, causing delays averaging 35 hours.

Airport officials confirmed the issue stemmed from a "network infrastructure failure" impacting multiple terminals. Major airlines including American, Delta, and JetBlue issued travel advisories, urging passengers to check flight statuses before arriving. Social media posts showed long lines snaking through the terminal as frustrated travelers waited for updates.

The outage comes during peak spring break travel season, when PBI typically handles over 20,000 daily passengers. Palm Beach County Mayor Gregg Weiss called the situation "unacceptable" and promised a full review. The FAA temporarily implemented ground stops for incoming flights until systems were partially restored by 10:15 AM ET.

This marks the second major operational disruption at PBI in 2026, following January's tarmac power failure that delayed 47 flights. The airport ranks among Florida's fastest-growing, with passenger traffic up 18% year-over-year. Transportation Security Administration teams implemented manual screening protocols during the outage, creating additional bottlenecks.

As of noon Tuesday, 68 departing flights (32% of the day's schedule) showed delays or cancellations on airport displays. Airport spokesperson Lacy Larson advised affected passengers to contact airlines directly for rebooking options. The incident is currently trending nationally as spring break travelers share their experiences using #PBIMeltdown.

Technicians continue working to fully restore systems, though airport officials warn residual delays may persist through the evening. The disruption highlights growing infrastructure pressures as Florida airports handle record passenger volumes. Similar system failures occurred at Orlando International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airports earlier this winter.
