When Will Gas Prices Drop? Experts Weigh In Amid Rising Costs...

Gas prices are climbing again across the U.S., sparking frustration among drivers and renewed searches for relief. The national average hit $4.18 per gallon this week, up 12 cents from last month, according to AAA. With summer travel season approaching, Americans are asking: When will prices finally fall?

The surge is tied to rising crude oil costs, refinery maintenance delays, and geopolitical tensions. OPEC+ extended production cuts through June, tightening global supply. Meanwhile, U.S. refineries are slower to ramp up output after winter, creating a supply crunch.

"We're in a perfect storm of factors," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. "Barring a major economic downturn, don't expect significant drops before late summer." Some analysts predict modest declines by September as refinery activity normalizes.

The White House faces mounting pressure as gas prices become a 2026 election issue. President Harris recently approved releases from the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve, but critics call it a "drop in the bucket." Social media shows drivers posting receipts from $100+ fill-ups, fueling public anger.

Regional disparities persist. California drivers pay $5.32 on average, while Texans see $3.89. Rural areas with long commutes are hardest hit. "I'm spending $600 a month just to get to work," said Ohio factory worker Mark Reynolds. "Something's got to give."

Energy analysts say relief hinges on three factors: OPEC+ policy shifts, hurricane season disruptions, and potential SPR releases. For now, experts advise shopping with price-tracking apps and considering loyalty programs. The next key date to watch is June 1, when OPEC+ meets to review production levels.
