Thousands Of US Flights Canceled As Severe Storms Disrupt Travel...

More than 2,300 US flights were canceled and over 5,000 delayed Sunday as severe thunderstorms swept across the Midwest and Northeast, creating ripple effects nationwide. The disruptions come during one of the busiest spring travel weekends, stranding thousands of passengers ahead of Monday's workweek.

Chicago O'Hare International Airport bore the brunt with 400+ cancellations, while Dallas, Denver, and New York airports also saw significant impacts. Airlines including American, United, and Southwest issued travel waivers allowing fee-free rebooking for affected passengers through Tuesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration had issued ground stops at multiple hubs Sunday afternoon as tornado warnings were issued in Illinois and Indiana. FlightAware data shows this marks the worst single-day disruption since January's winter storm cancellations.

Passengers reported multi-hour customer service wait times as airlines scrambled to accommodate rebookings. Social media posts showed crowded terminals with some travelers sleeping on floors at O'Hare and Newark Liberty International Airport.

Meteorologists warn the severe weather pattern may continue through Wednesday, potentially extending travel chaos. The disruptions coincide with peak spring break travel and the first major travel surge since pandemic restrictions lifted.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg acknowledged the disruptions Sunday evening, stating on Twitter that the FAA is "working with airlines to minimize impacts." The DOT's aviation consumer protection dashboard shows airlines have improved cancellation rates since 2022 but still face staffing challenges.

Industry analysts note this weekend's events test new passenger protection rules implemented last year requiring quicker refunds for canceled flights. The storms arrive as airlines face scrutiny over rising fares and operational reliability ahead of the summer travel season.
