Supreme Court To Hear Colorado Conversion Therapy Ban Case...

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday it will review Colorado's ban on conversion therapy for minors, setting the stage for a landmark ruling on LGBTQ+ rights. The case, which challenges a 2019 state law prohibiting licensed therapists from attempting to change a minor's sexual orientation or gender identity, could have nationwide implications.

Colorado is among 22 states that have banned the controversial practice, which major medical associations deem harmful. The lawsuit was brought by a Christian therapist and a conservative legal group arguing the ban violates free speech and religious liberty protections. Oral arguments are expected this fall.

The case gained renewed attention after lower courts upheld Colorado's law in 2024. Advocates on both sides have mobilized, with LGBTQ+ organizations warning of potential rollbacks to protections while conservative groups frame the issue as a First Amendment battle. The Supreme Court's decision to take the case comes amid heightened scrutiny of its conservative majority's approach to social issues.

Legal experts note the ruling could clarify whether state bans constitute professional regulation or unconstitutional speech restrictions. The American Psychological Association and 30 other medical groups filed briefs supporting Colorado's position, while 15 Republican-led states backed the challengers. Public opinion polls show 60% of Americans oppose conversion therapy for minors.

The case arrives as several states consider new conversion therapy legislation. A ruling is expected by June 2027, potentially reshaping the legal landscape ahead of the next presidential election. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser vowed to vigorously defend the law, calling it "a critical protection for vulnerable youth."
