Sierra Nevada Winter Storm Disrupts Travel, Triggers Avalanche Warnings...

A powerful late-season winter storm slammed the Sierra Nevada mountains this week, dumping heavy snow and triggering avalanche warnings across California and Nevada. The storm, which peaked on Tuesday, brought whiteout conditions and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, forcing road closures and stranding travelers.

Interstate 80, a major artery through the Sierra, remained closed for over 24 hours between Colfax and the Nevada state line due to multiple spinouts and avalanche risks. The California Highway Patrol reported at least 15 weather-related crashes, though no serious injuries were confirmed. Chain requirements were enforced for mountain passes as snowfall totals reached 3 feet in higher elevations.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service Reno office called this "one of the most significant April storms in recent memory." The storm's intensity surprised many residents, as spring typically brings milder conditions to the region. Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts reported powder conditions but warned of dangerous backcountry avalanche risks.

Pacific Gas & Electric reported scattered power outages affecting nearly 8,000 customers across Placer and Nevada counties. Utility crews worked through the night to restore service, but some remote areas remained without electricity as of Wednesday morning. Emergency shelters opened in Truckee and South Lake Tahoe for stranded motorists.

The storm comes as California's snowpack stands at 104% of average for this date, according to state water officials. While beneficial for drought relief, the rapid snowmelt expected later this spring raises flood concerns for foothill communities. The weather system is now moving east, with residual showers expected through Friday before warmer temperatures return this weekend.
