Santos Expulsion Vote Sparks Political Firestorm In Congress...

The House of Representatives voted Friday to expel Republican Congressman George Santos from office, marking only the sixth expulsion in U.S. history. The 311-114 vote came after months of controversy surrounding Santos's fabricated resume, campaign finance violations, and federal indictments.

Santos becomes the first House member expelled without a criminal conviction or Confederate ties. The New York Republican had survived two previous expulsion attempts, but mounting evidence and dwindling GOP support sealed his fate. His district will remain vacant until a special election is held.

The vote has ignited fierce debate about congressional ethics and partisan double standards. Democrats overwhelmingly supported expulsion, while Republicans split nearly evenly. House Speaker Mike Johnson opposed the measure, arguing it set a dangerous precedent.

Santos denounced the vote as a "politically motivated witch hunt" in an emotional Capitol press conference. The ousted congressman faces 23 federal charges including wire fraud, money laundering, and theft of public funds. His trial is scheduled for September 2024.

The expulsion creates immediate political consequences. New York Governor Kathy Hochul must call a special election within 10 days, with voting likely in February. Democrats see an opportunity to flip the seat in a district Biden won by 8 points in 2020.

Ethics experts say the case highlights systemic flaws in candidate vetting. "This should never have gotten this far," said former House Ethics Committee staffer Kedric Payne. "Both parties need better mechanisms to verify candidates' backgrounds before they reach Congress."

The Santos saga has captivated Americans since December 2022 when the New York Times exposed his fabricated biography. His fall from grace culminated in Friday's historic vote, which trended nationwide as voters weighed in on congressional accountability standards.
