Reddit Experiences Widespread Outage, Users Report Access Issues...

Reddit went down for thousands of users across the U.S. on Monday morning, sparking widespread complaints and confusion. The outage, which began around 9:30 AM ET, left many unable to access the platform or post content, according to outage tracking site Downdetector.

The disruption affected both the website and mobile app, with error messages appearing for users attempting to load threads or refresh feeds. Reports peaked at over 15,000 incidents by 10:00 AM ET, primarily concentrated in major U.S. cities including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

Reddit's status page initially showed no reported issues, but the company acknowledged the problem on Twitter around 10:15 AM ET. "We're aware of the difficulties some users are experiencing and are working to resolve them," the official Reddit account posted.

The outage comes during peak U.S. browsing hours, disrupting one of the internet's most active discussion platforms. Many users took to alternative social media sites to complain about the downtime, with #RedditDown trending on Twitter within an hour of the outage beginning.

This marks the third significant outage for Reddit in 2026, following similar incidents in January and February. The platform has faced growing scrutiny over server stability as its user base continues expanding beyond 500 million monthly active users.

Tech analysts suggest the outage could be related to recent infrastructure changes Reddit implemented to handle increased traffic. The company has been investing heavily in server upgrades since its 2025 IPO, but Monday's disruption indicates persistent challenges.

As of 11:00 AM ET, service appeared to be gradually restoring for some users, though intermittent issues continued. Reddit has not provided an estimated full restoration time or detailed explanation for the cause.

The outage particularly impacted moderators attempting to manage Monday morning discussions and content creators who rely on the platform for engagement. Several popular subreddits remained inaccessible hours after the initial reports.

This incident highlights Reddit's growing importance as a real-time information hub and the broader internet's vulnerability to single-point failures. With no major competitors in the forum-based social media space, users had few alternatives during the downtime.

Reddit's last major outage in February lasted approximately four hours before full service was restored. The company typically posts a post-mortem analysis following such incidents, though these often come days after service returns.
