The capsule's dimensions, slightly larger than Apollo-era modules, are trending today as NASA releases new training footage showing astronauts rehearsing inside the tight quarters.
The Artemis 2 mission will carry four astronauts—the first crewed lunar flight since 1972—making the capsule's livable space of 316 cubic feet a critical design factor. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen have been training inside mockups of the pressurized compartment since 2023.
Public interest surged this week after Boeing, Orion's primary contractor, shared behind-the-scenes footage of the crew module's assembly at Kennedy Space Center. The video highlights the capsule's advanced life support systems and redesigned seating compared to Artemis 1's uncrewed test flight configuration.
Unlike SpaceX's Dragon capsule at 13 feet in diameter, Orion was designed for deep-space missions with enhanced radiation shielding and a service module providing propulsion. The spacecraft will house astronauts for up to 21 days during the 10-day lunar flyby mission scheduled for September 2025, with contingency plans for extended operations.
NASA officials emphasized that while the capsule appears small, every cubic inch was optimized through 15 years of design iterations. "It's like a high-tech camper van for four," said astronaut Victor Glover during a recent press event. "We've got all the essentials with zero wasted space."
The capsule's size discussion coincides with NASA's release of updated Artemis program timelines this week. Agency administrators confirmed Artemis 2 remains on track despite earlier concerns about heat shield performance data from the 2022 Artemis 1 test flight.
Aviation analysts note public fascination with spacecraft dimensions reflects growing mainstream interest in crewed spaceflight. "People want to understand the human experience," said Space Foundation CEO Heather Pringle. "Knowing the capsule's size makes the mission more tangible for the public."
NASA plans to transport the completed Artemis 2 Orion capsule to launch complex 39B at Kennedy Space Center in early 2027 for final integration with the SLS rocket. The agency will host public tours of an Orion mockup at visitor centers nationwide starting next month.
