Iran Threatens To Close Strait Of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions...

Iran has renewed threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route, as tensions escalate with the US and its allies. The warning comes days after the US imposed new sanctions targeting Iran's missile and drone programs. Analysts warn such a move could disrupt 20% of the world's oil supply.

The strait, located between Iran and Oman, is only 21 miles wide at its narrowest point. Over 20 million barrels of oil pass through daily, making it one of the most strategically important waterways. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps controls access to the channel.

This latest threat follows a series of confrontations in the region, including recent US airstrikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria. The Biden administration has vowed to keep the strait open, with the US Navy's Fifth Fleet maintaining a strong presence nearby.

Oil prices jumped 3% in early trading following Iran's statement. The White House called the threats "unhelpful" while emphasizing America's commitment to regional stability. Energy analysts say prolonged closure could send gas prices soaring above $5 per gallon in the US.

The timing coincides with sensitive nuclear negotiations between Iran and world powers. Talks stalled last month after Iran increased its uranium enrichment activities. European diplomats are working to revive the 2015 nuclear deal abandoned by the Trump administration.

Pentagon officials confirm US forces remain on high alert in the Persian Gulf. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier strike group recently entered the region as a show of force. Military experts say Iran likely lacks the capability to maintain a long-term blockade.

This marks at least the fourth time since 2018 that Iran has threatened to close the strait. Previous warnings didn't materialize into action, but each escalation increases the risk of miscalculation. The situation remains fluid as both sides weigh their next moves.
