Georgia Lawmaker Shawn Harris Faces Ethics Probe Over Campaign Funds...

Georgia State Representative Shawn Harris is under investigation by the state ethics commission for alleged misuse of campaign funds, sparking widespread attention. The probe, confirmed Wednesday, centers on discrepancies in financial disclosures from his 2024 re-election campaign.

Harris, a Republican representing District 12 in northwest Georgia, has denied wrongdoing. The Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission began reviewing his filings after a complaint flagged unusual expenditures, including personal travel and luxury purchases.

The case gained national traction after watchdog group Common Cause Georgia highlighted it in a report last week. Harris, first elected in 2020, serves on the influential House Appropriations Committee. His district includes Dalton, known as the "Carpet Capital of the World."

Ethics experts say the investigation could have ripple effects in Georgia's GOP, where Harris had been considered a rising star. The commission has subpoenaed bank records and plans public hearings next month. State law prohibits using campaign funds for personal expenses unrelated to elections.

Harris told reporters Thursday he welcomes "full transparency" but called the complaint politically motivated. His Democratic opponent in November's election has seized on the controversy, demanding Harris resign if violations are proven.

The probe comes as Georgia remains a key battleground state ahead of the 2026 midterms. Similar cases in recent years have led to fines and resignations, including former Rep. David Stover's 2023 settlement for $15,000 in improper spending.

Local newspapers first reported the ethics filing last month, but searches for Harris spiked 480% Wednesday after Atlanta news stations covered the subpoenas. Georgia's ethics commission typically resolves cases within six months, meaning a decision could land weeks before the general election.
