Cook County Treasurer Announces Major Property Tax Relief Plan...

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas unveiled a sweeping property tax relief plan Tuesday aimed at easing financial burdens for homeowners and small businesses. The proposal, which includes expanded exemptions and payment deferrals, comes as property tax bills are set to hit mailboxes next month.

The plan would increase homeowner exemptions by 15% and create new protections for seniors and disabled residents. Pappas estimates the changes could save the average homeowner $300-$500 annually. "We're seeing too many families forced to choose between property taxes and basic necessities," Pappas said at a Chicago press conference.

The announcement comes amid rising concerns about housing affordability in Cook County, where property taxes have increased 42% over the past decade. Recent data shows nearly 12% of county homeowners are delinquent on property tax payments.

Local officials reacted quickly to the proposal. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called it "a critical step" while some suburban mayors expressed concerns about potential impacts on municipal budgets. The Cook County Board must approve the plan before it can take effect.

Public interest in the treasurer's office has surged this week as residents search for information about upcoming tax bills. The office's website saw a 300% increase in traffic following Tuesday's announcement. Pappas urged homeowners to check their eligibility for existing exemptions while awaiting potential new relief.

If approved, the changes would take effect for the second installment of 2025 property taxes due later this year. The treasurer's office plans to launch a public education campaign about the proposal in April.

Cook County's property tax system has faced increasing scrutiny since a 2023 study found significant assessment disparities between neighborhoods. Pappas said her plan includes measures to address these inequities through improved transparency and appeal processes.
