Billy Bob Thornton Makes Rare Public Appearance At Film Festival...

Actor and filmmaker Billy Bob Thornton sparked fan excitement with a surprise appearance at the 2026 Austin Film Festival on Thursday. The reclusive star, known for avoiding Hollywood events, attended a screening of his 1996 breakout film Sling Blade alongside director Kevin Smith, who moderated a post-show Q&A.

Thornton, 70, last appeared publicly in 2024 during press tours for his FX series The Gilded Age. His unexpected festival appearance comes weeks after Amazon announced a Sling Blade limited series revival with Thornton reprising his Oscar-winning role as Karl Childers.

Festival attendees described Thornton as reflective during the 90-minute discussion, where he revealed he initially turned down the Sling Blade lead role. "I told the producers they should cast Dwight Yoakam instead," Thornton told the laughing crowd. "Took three months to realize nobody else could play that part."

The event trended nationally as fans shared clips of Thornton discussing his iconic character's signature voice and mannerisms. Social media reactions peaked when the actor demonstrated Karl's distinct speech pattern live on stage, marking his first public performance of the role in 15 years.

Thornton's appearance coincides with renewed interest in his filmography following last month's Criterion Collection release of A Simple Plan. Industry analysts note the timing suggests strategic promotion for the upcoming Sling Blade series, which begins production this summer in Arkansas.

Festival organizers confirmed Thornton departed immediately after the event without attending other screenings. His representatives have not commented on whether this signals increased public engagements for the typically private star.

Austin Film Festival director Barbara Morgan called Thornton's participation "a masterclass in character creation" that drew record walk-up ticket sales. The festival continues through Sunday with tributes to other 1990s independent cinema landmarks.
