Ashland High School Band Loses $50K In Instruments To Overnight Theft...

Thieves stole approximately $50,000 worth of musical instruments from Ashland High School in Oregon early Monday morning, leaving the award-winning band program scrambling days before critical performances. The theft occurred between 1-4 a.m. on April 6 when suspects broke into the school's locked band room, according to Ashland Police Department reports.

Among the stolen items were professional-grade saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and percussion equipment purchased through years of student fundraising. Band director Mark Johnson called the loss "devastating" for the 120-member program, which competes nationally and was preparing for spring competitions. Many students rely on school instruments they can't afford personally.

Security footage shows at least two suspects loading instruments into a white van. Police believe the thieves specifically targeted high-value equipment, skipping cheaper beginner instruments. The case has gained national attention as schools nationwide report increasing thefts of music and sports gear.

Local businesses and alumni launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $30,000 within 12 hours. "The outpouring reminds us why Ashland is special," said Principal Samuel Ortiz. Meanwhile, neighboring schools have loaned instruments so students can continue rehearsing.

The theft coincides with growing concerns about school property crimes post-pandemic. A 2025 National School Safety Report found instrument thefts increased 27% last year, often tied to online resale markets. Ashland PD advises schools to engrave equipment and upgrade storage security.

Investigators are reviewing pawn shop records and online marketplaces. Anyone with information can contact Ashland Police at (541) 482-5211. The school plans to install motion sensors and GPS trackers in replacement instruments using donated funds.
